70 day trips within 3 hours of downtown Atlanta, grouped by free-flow drive time: 14 under an hour, 23 at 1-2 hours, 33 at 2-3 hours, with family-of-four cost, dog and stroller notes from our data.

Short answer

There are 70 day trips within 3 hours of downtown Atlanta in our drive-time data: 14 are an hour or less away, 23 take 1 to 2 hours and 33 take 2 to 3 hours. Closest is Georgia Aquarium at 3 min; the farthest that still makes the cut is Providence Canyon State Park at 2 hr 55 min.

Every time below is a free-flow drive from downtown Atlanta — no traffic model — from our Georgia drive-time matrix. Leaving at 5 p.m. on a Friday is a different trip. Where our attraction dataset has the place, you also get what a family of four pays to get in and park, and whether dogs and strollers work there. Where it doesn’t, you’ll see a dash, not a guess.

How to read the tables

  • Drive (free-flow): minutes from downtown Atlanta with no traffic, rounded to the minute. Real Saturday or Friday-evening drives can run longer; long highway routes can also differ from what a phone app shows. See the accuracy note on the drive-time page.
  • Family of four: two adults, two children, admission plus one car’s parking, as published by the venue when we collected it. “Parking, no admission” means the venue charges only for the car. An asterisk means the venue publishes no child price, so children are counted at the adult price. A dash means the place isn’t in our price data.
  • Dogs: Yes, Leashed, Some areas or No, from the venue’s published pet policy. Service animals are a separate rule everywhere.
  • Stroller: Yes, Partly (some paths or areas) or No, from what the venue or park publishes.
  • Links go to our own guide for that place, or to the regional guide where we don’t have a dedicated page yet.

How we built this

We took every Atlanta row in the Georgia Drive-Time Matrix (88 destinations from Atlanta, routed with OpenStreetMap/OSRM, collected September 17, 2026), kept the 70 with a free-flow drive of 180 minutes or less, and grouped them into three bands: 60 minutes or less, 61 to 120, and 121 to 180. 17 destinations are more than 3 hours away and are left out; for those, see weekend getaways from Atlanta.

We then matched each place to our Georgia attraction dataset by name, only where the dataset has that exact place (the park itself, the waterfall itself, the town itself). 39 of the 70 places matched. Towns and mountain gaps without their own row stay blank rather than borrowing a nearby venue’s numbers.

Download the data: drive-time matrix (CSV), (JSON), attraction dataset (JSON). All of our datasets live on the It’s Georgia data hub.

What we couldn’t verify

  • Traffic. The matrix has a Saturday 9 a.m. column, but it is empty until we collect traffic-modelled times. Every time on this page is free-flow.
  • 1 place left out. Clayton (Rabun County) is in the matrix, but its row was routed to the wrong spot, so we left it out until the row is fixed.
  • Prices and rules for 31 places. They aren’t in our attraction dataset yet, so cost, dogs and stroller show a dash.
  • Prices change. Figures are as published by each venue when we collected them. Check the venue before you drive.

FAQ

What are the best day trips from Atlanta under an hour?

In our drive-time data, 14 places are an hour or less from downtown Atlanta by free-flow drive, including Sweetwater Creek State Park (28 min), Stone Mountain Park (32 min), Kennesaw Mountain NBP (34 min), Senoia (54 min) and Chattahoochee River NRA (1 hr). Stone Mountain Park and Sweetwater Creek State Park charge only for parking: $25 and $10 a car in our data.

What day trips are about 2 hours from Atlanta?

23 places take 1 to 2 hours free-flow, including Dahlonega (1 hr 24 min), Athens (1 hr 31 min), Amicalola Falls State Park (1 hr 37 min), Macon (1 hr 37 min), Blue Ridge (1 hr 50 min) and Helen (1 hr 52 min).

Another 33 take 2 to 3 hours, such as Vogel State Park (2 hr 1 min), Tallulah Gorge State Park (2 hr 13 min), Cloudland Canyon State Park (2 hr 39 min) and Augusta (2 hr 44 min).

Which day trips from Atlanta are free?

Among places with price data, 4 are free to get into: Woody Gap, Blood Mountain, Mercier Orchards and Helton Creek Falls. 8 state parks on the list show $10 parking and no admission in our data, and 10 towns are free to walk around, including Senoia, Dahlonega, Eatonton and Ellijay.

Which day trips from Atlanta are dog-friendly?

24 of the 28 places with pet-policy data allow dogs, on a leash or outright, including Sweetwater Creek State Park, Stone Mountain Park, Amicalola Falls State Park, Tallulah Gorge State Park, Blood Mountain and Madison. Dogs are not allowed at Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta Botanical Garden and Mercier Orchards.

Is Savannah a day trip from Atlanta?

Not by our cut-off. Savannah is more than 3 hours each way: 4 hr 34 min free-flow in our matrix, and about 3 hr 45 min on a typical drive in the spot check on our drive-time page. So it isn’t on this list. It works better as a weekend getaway.

Are these drive times accurate?

They are free-flow times: road routing from downtown Atlanta with no traffic model. They are a fair way to compare places against each other, but a Friday-evening or holiday drive can take longer. Our drive-time page shows how the free-flow figures compared with typical drives on the routes we spot-checked.

How we checked this guide: Dates, hours, admission and parking prices, and access details were verified against the official sources listed below on . Operators change schedules and raise prices without notice, so confirm anything time-sensitive before you drive. The figures in this guide also feed our Georgia Attraction Transparency Index and Family Day-Out Cost Index.

About Hank Whitlock

Hank Whitlock is the pen name of the It's Georgia editor. Every guide is built around the questions a busy family actually asks before a trip: how long is the drive, what does parking cost, can the stroller make it, are dogs allowed. Details are checked against official park, city, and venue sources, and each guide shows the date it was last updated.
