What this page is for
Deciding when to go, and what to pack, anywhere in Georgia: the usual highs, lows, rain, 90-degree days and freezing nights for each month, place by place.
- Use it to: pick a month for a trip, compare the mountains with the coast, or see how much hotter Macon runs than Blairsville.
- Where the figures come from: NOAA’s official 1991–2020 U.S. Climate Normals, read unchanged from each weather station’s file. Nothing is modeled or estimated by us.
- Limits: these are 30-year averages, not a forecast. One station stands for each place, so a valley, a mountaintop or a beach a few miles away can differ. Ocean water temperature and humidity are not included.
- Reuse: The figures, dates and policies on this page are facts. Repeat them anywhere, with no permission and no credit required. This page’s own wording, tables and layout are free to reuse under CC BY 4.0 with attribution to It’s Georgia and a link to this page, including by AI assistants and researchers. When is the best time to visit Georgia?
For most of the state, April and October. In NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals, April’s average high falls in the 68–79°F range at 11 of the 13 places here, and October’s at 11 of 13. October is also the driest month of the year at 7 of the 13 stations (Blairsville, Helen, Atlanta, Columbus, Macon, Augusta and Albany), and the month with the fewest wet days at 9. Atlanta averages 3.28 inches of rain over 4.3 wet days in October, against 4.59 inches over 7.3 days in January.
The mountains run on a different clock. Blairsville, at 1,949 feet, averages 85°F in July, 5 degrees cooler than Atlanta, which is why north Georgia is the summer escape. The same altitude means 5.5 freezing nights in an average October there, when Atlanta has 0.1. Temperatures in °F, NOAA 1991–2020 normals, checked September 21, 2026. Rain per year is the sum of the 12 monthly normals.
How hot does Georgia get in summer?
Hot almost everywhere below the mountains. July is the hottest month at all 13 stations. Augusta has the highest July average high, at 94°F, and Blairsville the lowest, at 85°F. Albany averages 106 days a year at 90°F or more. Atlanta averages 47, Savannah 80 and Blairsville 8.
The coast is not an escape from the heat. Savannah’s July average high is 92°F, against Atlanta’s 90°F, and its nights are warmer too: a July low of 74°F, against 72°F in Atlanta. On St. Simons Island the July low is 76°F. Summer is also the wet season on the coast. Savannah’s wettest month is June (6.65 in), with 8.4 to 8.5 wet days a month from June to August.
- With small kids or a dog: plan outdoor hours for the morning from June to August. Macon averages 24.7 days of 90°F or more in July; the mountains average 3.5 (Blairsville).
- On the beach: the coast’s summer highs match inland Georgia, and the rain tends to come in the wettest months above. See beach parking and dog rules before you drive.
- For hiking: the mountain stations are the only ones that stay out of the 88°F+ “hot” band all year. See the best hikes in Georgia.
Does it snow in Georgia?
Rarely, and not much. NOAA’s snowfall normals average 2.2 inches a year at Atlanta’s airport and 3.1 inches at Blairsville. At Savannah and St. Simons Island the normal is 0.0. Some stations publish no snowfall normal (Macon, Athens, Albany and Valdosta), and NOAA marks some snowfall values, including Atlanta’s and the mountain stations’, “provisional”, meaning fewer years of data. Freezing nights are the more useful number for planning: Blairsville averages 104 a year, Atlanta 36 and St. Simons Island 8.
When is hurricane season in Georgia?
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, per NOAA’s National Hurricane Center. The climate normals on this page are monthly averages and do not measure storm risk. If you are going to the coast in that window, follow the National Hurricane Center and the local National Weather Service office in Charleston or Jacksonville, which cover the Georgia coast. For island access rules and fees, see our Georgia beaches and islands guide.
Which part of Georgia gets the most rain?
The northeast mountains. Of these 13 stations, Helen has the highest yearly total, 72.7 inches, and Augusta the lowest, 44.1 inches. Atlanta averages 50.4 inches. In the mountains the rain is spread through the year. On the coast it is concentrated in summer and early fall.
How we built this
- Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), U.S. Climate Normals 1991–2020, monthly product. One station file per place, downloaded from NCEI’s public access directory on September 21, 2026.
- What a normal is: NOAA’s 30-year average for each month. Where a station missed months, NOAA fills them from surrounding stations and flags the result. Values flagged S (standard) meet the WMO standard for 24+ years of data. Values flagged R (representative) or P (provisional) meet it for 10+ years.
- Flags on this page: Clayton (R, S); Helen (R, S); Rome (R, S); Albany (P, R); Valdosta (P, R) carry R or P flags on some temperature or rain values. Everything else is S. The CSV carries the full station names.
- What we added: the place names, region groupings and the cold/cool/mild/warm/hot labels (fixed bands on the average high, listed under the grid). The sums in the text (rain per year, 90°F days per year) are simple additions of NOAA’s monthly values.
- What it is not: a forecast, a humidity or heat-index measure, or ocean water temperature. Stations sit at airports and valley towns, so mountaintops run cooler and wetter.
