Atlanta’s average high runs from 54°F in January to 90°F in July; the north Georgia mountains run about 5°F cooler in July, and the coast is the hottest and wettest place to be in summer, with Savannah averaging 24.6 days of 90°F or more in July.
The table below shows the usual high and low for three anchor places and what to pack for each month, checked . Temperatures are NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals, the same figures behind our Georgia Weather by Month page. The packing advice is ours, built from fixed rules on those numbers (listed under the table), not from a forecast.

Mountains, Atlanta or the coast: what changes
- Mountains: bring a real coat from December to February. Blairsville averages 22 nights a year at or below 32°F in January alone, with a January low of 25°F, and its July high is only 85°F, so summer evenings in the hills are cool enough for a light layer. See the best hikes in Georgia.
- Atlanta and middle Georgia: the four-season middle. January highs sit near 54°F with 13 freezing nights; July brings 16 days at 90°F or hotter. A jacket you can take off covers March, April, October and November.
- Coast: mild winters (Savannah’s January high is 61°F) and the longest hot season: 25 days of 90°F or more in July and 21 in August. June is Savannah’s wettest month at 6.65 inches. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, per NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, so check the forecast before a late-summer coastal trip. See the beach guide before you pack for the sand.
How we chose what to pack
- Weather data: NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals 1991–2020, monthly product, one station per place. These are 30-year averages, not a forecast, and mountaintops and valleys a few miles from a station can differ.
- Our packing rules (ours, not NOAA’s): average high under 55°F: warm coat and layers; 55–67°F: a jacket and layers; 68–79°F: light layers; 80–87°F: summer clothes and a sun hat; 88°F or more: the lightest clothes and sun protection. Add hat and gloves when a place has 10 or more freezing nights that month, a warm evening layer when the average low is under 45°F, a rain jacket at 8 or more days with 0.10 inch of rain or more, an umbrella at 6 or 7 such days, and water and morning plans at 10 or more days of 90°F or hotter.
- What this page is not: a forecast, a humidity or heat-index measure, or a safety guide. For storms and heat advisories, use the National Weather Service for the exact place a few days before you go.
