What This Page Is For

Road distance and drive time from 11 cities (Atlanta, Savannah, Macon, Augusta, Columbus and 6 Southeastern metros) to 88 Georgia destinations, so you can check “how far is it” without opening a maps app for every candidate on a shortlist. Twenty-nine of the 88 destinations show a typical drive time without traffic; the rest still show an older estimate. Each time is marked with which kind it is.

  • Use it to: compare drive times across several destinations at once, then click through to the guide for parking, cost and dog policy.
  • Where the figures come from: for 29 well-known destinations (the mountain towns, Atlanta attractions, Savannah and the coast, Callaway Gardens), the drive time Google Maps gives on a quiet early-morning road, read on 2026-10-26, plus a cushion of the smaller of 10 minutes or 15 percent, rounded to the nearest 5 minutes. We call that a typical drive time without traffic. For the other 59 destinations, OSRM (OpenStreetMap) free-flow routing collected 2026-09-29, with no cushion.
  • Known gaps: a typical time is not a rush-hour or Saturday-morning time, and there is no traffic-aware column. The 59 older OSRM figures ran 45 to 65 minutes longer than a typical drive on the three long coastal routes compared below, so read them as an upper estimate until those destinations are re-measured. Cumberland Island stays on the older figure because its Google Maps result did not match the OSRM route closely enough to trust.
  • Reuse: figures on this page may be cited or embedded with a link back to this page.

Pick a Trip From Your City

Choose where you start, how long you will drive and what you want to see. This lists the closest matches from the drive-time table on this page. Times marked typical come from Google Maps on a quiet early-morning road plus a cushion; the rest are older OSRM free-flow figures that can run long on coastal trips (see the note below).

How to read the times: a typical time (marked “Typical, no traffic” under the time) is what Google Maps gives on a quiet early-morning road plus a cushion for stops and light traffic. It is not a rush-hour or Saturday time; add more for those. An older estimate (marked “OSRM free-flow, older”) has no traffic and no cushion, and on long coastal routes it ran well over a typical drive:

Atlanta → Tybee Island5h 03m4h 10m−53 min
Atlanta → Jekyll Island6h 00m4h 55m−65 min
Our 17 September hand-check of the same three trips found about 3h 45m, 4h 10m and 5h 15m. Until the other 59 destinations are re-measured, treat any older figure over about 3 hours as an upper estimate.

Typical times: Google Maps, early morning 2026-10-26, plus the stated cushion. Older estimates: OSRM (OpenStreetMap) routing collected 2026-09-29, downtown-to-downtown / centroid-to-site. Where no drivable route exists the pair is omitted rather than estimated. How we check

FAQ

How far is it from Atlanta to North Georgia mountain towns like Blue Ridge or Helen?

Blue Ridge is about 93 miles from downtown Atlanta, typically 1 hour 40 minutes without traffic. Helen is about 87 miles, typically 1 hour 45 minutes, and Dahlonega is about 66 miles, typically 1 hour 20 minutes. These are Google Maps times on a quiet road plus a cushion; our older OSRM figures were 1 hour 50, 1 hour 52 and 1 hour 24.

Are these drive times accurate, or do they ignore traffic?

They ignore rush hour. A typical time is the time Google Maps gives for the route on a quiet early-morning road (read on 2026-10-26), plus a cushion of the smaller of 10 minutes or 15 percent, rounded to the nearest 5 minutes. That is close to a normal daytime drive on mountain and in-state routes; on a Friday evening or an event Saturday, add more. Fifty-nine destinations still show the older OSRM free-flow figure, which ran 44 to 65 minutes longer than a typical drive on the three long coastal routes compared above.

Why don't you publish traffic-aware drive times for every route?

Traffic-aware routing needs a paid routing API, and we have not enabled one. We re-measured 29 destinations by reading Google Maps early in the morning, which we can check by hand; doing every route that way takes much longer, so the other 59 stay on the older figure for now. We will re-measure them if people use this page enough to justify it. The older OSRM figures stay in the download so the two can be compared.

Which Georgia destinations are closest to Atlanta?

Among the destinations tracked here, the closest are the Atlanta-metro attractions themselves (Stone Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain, the Chattahoochee River sites), typically under 45 minutes, followed by North Georgia mountain towns at 1.5–2 hours and Athens/Macon at roughly 1–1.5 hours. For every destination within 3 hours of Atlanta, grouped by drive time with cost, dog and stroller notes, see day trips from Atlanta by drive time.

Crossing the whole state rather than heading to one place? Our answer on how long it takes to drive across Georgia times eight border-to-border and capital-to-coast drives in Google Maps, from the Tennessee line to Florida and from Alabama to South Carolina.

How we checked this guide: Dates, hours, admission and parking prices, and access details were verified against the official sources listed below on . Operators change schedules and raise prices without notice, so confirm anything time-sensitive before you drive. About It's Georgia Editorial Team

The It's Georgia Editorial Team writes every answer on this site around the questions a busy family actually asks before a trip: how long is the drive, what does parking cost, can the stroller make it, are dogs allowed. Details are checked against official park, city, and venue sources, and each answer shows the date it was last updated.
