Helen and Dahlonega From Atlanta: A North Georgia Day Trip

Helen and Dahlonega day trips from Atlanta: drive times, Gold Museum hours and prices, visitor centers, and what we could not confirm.

By It's Georgia Admin·Updated ·3 min read

Short answer

Dahlonega is 66 road miles and about 1 hour 20 minutes from downtown Atlanta in our drive-time data; Helen is 87 miles and about 1 hour 45 minutes. The Dahlonega Gold Museum charges $10 for adults, and both towns are walkable, so one town makes a full day and both make a long one.

Drive times come from our Georgia drive-time matrix (typical drive without traffic, Google Maps, October 26, 2026). Dahlonega’s own tourism site says only that it is “only an hour north of Atlanta”; we use the measured time. Helen’s site gives no distance.

Read this first: the prices, hours and rules on this page repeat what the Georgia State Parks, Dahlonega and Helen tourism pages named under Sources said when we read them on November 3, 2026. They can change, so check the current page of each place, or ask each town’s visitor center, before you rely on them.

Anything we could not confirm is marked Not confirmed where it appears and listed under What We Could Not Confirm.

A Simple Plan

  • One town, full day: pick Dahlonega for a museum and a historic square, or Helen for the river and the village.
  • Both towns: start early and decide in the morning, because we have not confirmed the drive between them.
  • Leave time for the return: add the Atlanta drive times above to your plan; Friday and weekend traffic is not in them.

What We Could Not Confirm

  • Drive time between Dahlonega and Helen: not in any source we read.
  • Tubing season, prices, age and height rules, and river safety wording: not read. Ask the operator and the Chattahoochee River conditions pages before you float.
  • Winery tasting fees and hours: Dahlonega’s site lists a wine trail but gave no tasting details. Ask each winery.
  • Helen visitor center hours and Dahlonega visitor center hours: neither page states them.
  • Parking rules and fees in either town: not researched.
