What this page is for

Find out whether a Georgia place you remember has closed, changed its name or moved, and where the proof is. Old names stay in search results and printed guides long after a place changes, so this list pairs each one with what is there now.

  • Use it to: check an old name before you drive somewhere, or find the new name of a park, winery, restaurant or attraction.
  • Where the facts come from: the operator’s own page, a state agency page or a primary listing that says the place is closed. Each row links its source and shows the day we last read it.
  • Read carefully: the list is new and short. A place that is missing from it is not proof that it is open. It grows as we confirm more.
  • Related: Georgia state parks and historic sites, places to go in Georgia and the free Georgia datasets.

Short answer: 5 Georgia places are in this tracker, checked . Gordonia-Alatamaha State Park became Jack Hill State Park in 2020, Stephen C. Foster State Park became Okefenokee State Park on September 1, 2026, and three businesses have closed: Serenberry Vineyards, Wall’s BBQ and North Georgia BBQ’s Gainesville location. Every row links to its proof.

How we built this list

We started from changes already recorded in our own Georgia guides, then re-read each one at its source on October 22 and 23, 2026: the Georgia State Parks pages for the two renamed parks, Yelp’s listings for Serenberry Vineyards and Wall’s BBQ, and the Gainesville Times report on North Georgia BBQ. A row is added only when a page we can link says the place closed, changed its name or moved. The “when” column gives the date as precisely as the source does, and says so when the date is not published.

What we left out

Cancelled events are not places, so they stay in the event calendar with a cancelled label. Seasonal closings and temporary closures, such as a golf course closed for renovation, are not here because the place is still open. Know of a closing or a rename? Tell us through the corrections page with a link to the proof.

Questions people ask

Is Gordonia-Alatamaha State Park still open?

Yes, under a new name. The state renamed it Jack Hill State Park in 2020 to honor the late senator Jack Hill, and Georgia State Parks lists it on its own Jack Hill page. It is in Reidsville, Tattnall County. Our Jack Hill State Park page has hours, costs and dog rules.

What happened to Stephen C. Foster State Park?

It is now Okefenokee State Park. Georgia DNR’s State Parks Division announced the rename effective September 1, 2026, saying the new name reflects the park’s place as the western entrance to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. The park is in Fargo. See our Okefenokee State Park page and the Okefenokee Swamp guide.

Has Serenberry Vineyards closed?

It appears so. Yelp lists Serenberry Vineyards at 450 Tipton Trl in Morganton as closed, with the listing updated in October 2026, and the winery’s own website had expired when we checked on . The owners have not published a closing date. Open wineries are in our North Georgia wineries guide.

Did Wall's BBQ in Savannah close?

It appears so. Yelp lists Wall’s BBQ at 515 E York Ln in Savannah as closed, with the listing updated in October 2026. We have not reached the owner and no closing date is published, so call before you go. Other barbecue is in our best BBQ in Georgia guide.

Did North Georgia BBQ close its Gainesville restaurant?

Yes, that location. The Gainesville Times reports the downtown Gainesville restaurant permanently closed after about two and a half years, in summer 2026. The Dahlonega (59 E. Main St.) and Cleveland (897 S. Main St.) locations are listed as open. See the best BBQ in Georgia guide.

How does a place get on this list?

Only with a source we can link: the operator’s own page, a state or federal agency, or a primary listing that says the place is closed. A rumor, a single review or a social post is not enough. Each row shows its source and the date we last checked it.

About Hank Whitlock

Hank Whitlock is the pen name of the It's Georgia editor. Every guide is built around the questions a busy family actually asks before a trip: how long is the drive, what does parking cost, can the stroller make it, are dogs allowed. Details are checked against official park, city, and venue sources, and each guide shows the date it was last updated.
