What this page is for
Find a Georgia hotel or inn where the building itself is the history: when it went up, what it was before it took guests, and whether it is on the National Register.
- Use it to: search by town or by what the building used to be (a cotton warehouse, a mill, an office tower, a millionaires’ club) and pick a stay with a story.
- Where the facts come from: each hotel’s own website, National Park Service and National Register records, Historic Hotels of America and other published histories. Every hotel’s sources are listed at the bottom.
- Read carefully: “not published” means we couldn’t find it in a reliable source, not that it doesn’t exist. Dates that sources disagree on show both.
- Related: Athens’ three boutique hotels, compared and Georgia drive times.
Short answer: 34 Georgia hotels and inns still take overnight guests in historic buildings. The oldest building is the River Street Inn in Savannah, a cotton warehouse from 1817; the oldest built as a hotel is The Marshall House, opened on Broughton Street in 1851. 30 of the 34 started as something else, from family homes to an Atlanta office tower and a Savannah power plant, and 9 belong to Historic Hotels of America. Search or filter the table below; each row lists its sources.

How we built this list
A hotel or inn is in the list when two things are true. First, it takes overnight guests today, confirmed on its own website or a current visitor-bureau listing. Second, the building is historic: built before 1976, or on the National Register (on its own or in a historic district), or a member of Historic Hotels of America, the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s program.
For each one we recorded when the building went up, what it was first, when it began taking guests, its architect where one is published, its National Register status, Historic Hotels of America membership and its room count. Each fact comes from a source we opened, listed below. Wikipedia was used only to find leads, never as a source. We don’t list room rates, which change.
“Savannah Historic District” means the hotel stands inside Savannah’s National Historic Landmark district; we did not check whether each building is counted as a contributing building. The DeSoto’s current tower dates from 1968 and replaced the 1890 DeSoto Hotel on the same site; it is included because it is a Historic Hotels of America member.
What we left out, and why
- Hotel Bardo Savannah (formerly Mansion on Forsyth Park): The 1888 Kayton house survives, but SAH Archipedia says the 2005 hotel was new construction that copied the house; the house holds a restaurant and cooking school. (source)
- Spencer House Inn, St. Marys: Built as a hotel in 1872, but its official website did not load, so we could not confirm it still takes guests. (source)
- Tybee Island Inn: In a former Fort Screven hospital building, but no build date is published.
- Queen Anne Inn, Augusta: Listed by tourism sites as an 1894 house; no official website could be found. (source)
- Dillard House, Dillard: No published build dates for the buildings guests stay in.
- Hotel Warm Springs and the Paxton House, Thomasville: Their websites no longer load, so we could not confirm either is still open.
- Perry Lane Hotel, Savannah: A new building, opened in 2018.
- Hotel Tybee: The original hotel burned in 1909 and its successor was torn down in 1960; today's hotel only reuses the name.
