Short answer
Most North Georgia mountain towns are 20 minutes to an hour apart by car. The shortest hops are Blue Ridge to Ellijay (19 minutes, 16 miles) and Helen to Hiawassee (31 minutes, 21 miles). The longest common drive, Ellijay to Clayton, takes about 1 hour 38 minutes for 81 miles. Times are Google Maps estimates, as of October 2026.
We checked all 21 drives between seven mountain towns (Helen, Blue Ridge, Dahlonega, Hiawassee, Ellijay, Blairsville and Clayton) in Google Maps on October 1, 2026, town center to town center. Use them for planning, not as a promise. These are two-lane mountain roads, and a leaf-season Saturday can add real time. Which mountain towns are closest together?
Think of the mountains as two clusters. In the west, Blue Ridge, Ellijay and Blairsville all sit on US-76 and are 19 to 42 minutes apart. In the east, Helen, Hiawassee, Blairsville and Clayton are 24 to 58 minutes apart. Blairsville is the link between the two, and Dahlonega sits to the south, 38 minutes from Helen and about an hour from Blue Ridge or Hiawassee.
So a base in Blairsville or Hiawassee keeps most of the map within an hour. A base in Ellijay or Clayton puts the other end of the mountains more than an hour and a half away. If you’re still choosing a town, our guide to picking a North Georgia mountain town compares them by what you want to do.
Can you visit Helen and Blue Ridge in one day?
Yes, but it’s a lot of driving. Helen to Blue Ridge is 48.6 miles and about 1 hour 6 minutes each way, so plan on 2 hours 15 minutes in the car before you stop for anything. It works better as two days, or as a loop with a night in between. For a side-by-side of the two towns, see Blue Ridge vs. Helen.
What’s the scenic way between Helen and Blairsville?
The Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway. Google’s fastest Helen-to-Blairsville route already uses part of it (GA-348), at 41 minutes. The full byway is a 40-mile loop on GA-348, GA-180 and GA-17/GA-75 that circles the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River, with stops like Dukes Creek Falls, Hogpen Gap on the Appalachian Trail and Brasstown Bald. The U.S. Forest Service says to allow at least three hours to drive it.
Why do mountain drives take longer than the miles suggest?
Curves, climbs and traffic in town. Dahlonega to Hiawassee is only 43 miles but takes just over an hour over the mountains on GA-17/GA-75, while Blue Ridge to Blairsville covers 23 miles of US-76 in 26 minutes. October weekends, when the leaves turn, are the slowest of the year.
When we checked, Google Maps was routing some alternate routes around a closure on US-76 east of Blue Ridge, so look at 511GA, the Georgia Department of Transportation’s road-conditions map, before you leave.
