Which Georgia Christmas Town Is Worth the Drive?

Short answer

There is no single “best” Georgia Christmas town — Helen, Dahlonega, Senoia, Marietta, Thomasville and Savannah each suit a different kind of trip, and it comes down to how much time you have and whether you want spectacle or quiet. This page answers by scenario instead of picking a winner; each line is pulled from our full Christmas towns guide.

Pick by what matters on your trip

Only have an evening Senoia — the Light Up Senoia parade starts at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 5, 2026, with the Christkindl Market open the same evening. About 50 minutes from Atlanta, free to attend, and you’re done by 8 p.m.
Have a toddler or a stroller Senoia or Marietta Square — both are flat, compact, paved squares with short walks between everything.
Are on a tight budget Helen’s Christmas Market, Nov. 28–29 or Dec. 5–6, 2026 — free admission; you only pay for parking and food.
Want one big spectacle Thomasville’s Victorian Christmas, Dec. 10–11, 2026, 6–9 p.m. — reindeer, carriage rides and a 22-ft tree across two confirmed evenings.
Have a whole weekend Savannah, any time from Nov. 19, 2026 to Jan. 3, 2027 — a six-week Christmas market open daily 11 a.m.–9 p.m., plus free squares and lights.
Want to avoid crowds Madison or Juliette on a weekday — neither is a mass-attendance town, so you’ll have the street to yourself.
It rains The Marietta Pilgrimage Christmas Home Tour, Dec. 4–6, 2026, or Dalton’s Snow Queen Ballet, Nov. 19–22 — both are indoor, ticketed, and run regardless of weather.

FAQ

What is the best Christmas town in Georgia?

Helen, if you want the most Christmas per square block — a Bavarian-themed downtown with a free market on Nov. 28–29 and Dec. 5–6, 2026. Thomasville wins on single-night spectacle with its Victorian Christmas on Dec. 10–11, and Savannah wins on duration with a market running daily from Nov. 19 to Jan. 3, 2027. (Full comparison.)

Which Georgia Christmas town is closest to Atlanta?

Marietta, roughly 25 minutes from downtown Atlanta, with the Pilgrimage Christmas Home Tour on Dec. 4–6, 2026. Senoia is next at about 50 minutes and is the better free option, with the Light Up Senoia parade on Dec. 5 and an Atlanta Christkindl Market location running from Nov. 27 through Christmas Eve.

Are Georgia Christmas town events free?

Mostly yes. Helen’s Christmas Market, the Senoia parade and Christkindl Market, the Savannah Christmas Market and every town tree lighting and parade here are free to attend. The paid exceptions are ticketed indoor events: the Marietta Pilgrimage home tour at $40 advance, Jarrell Plantation at $7 for adults, and Dalton’s Christmas with the Austin Family at $15.

Which Georgia Christmas town works best with a stroller?

Senoia and Marietta Square. Both are flat, paved, and small enough that nothing is more than a few hundred yards from the car. Helen is walkable but gets shoulder-to-shoulder on market weekends, and the Marietta Pilgrimage home tour itself is a poor stroller choice — historic houses with stairs and narrow halls.

About Hank Whitlock

Hank Whitlock is the pen name of the It's Georgia editor. Every guide is built around the questions a busy family actually asks before a trip: how long is the drive, what does parking cost, can the stroller make it, are dogs allowed. Details are checked against official park, city, and venue sources, and each guide shows the date it was last updated.
