What is Atlanta doing for New Year’s Eve 2026?
As of , we found no official 2026 announcement for a citywide Atlanta show. That is a change from the old pattern, so it is worth knowing what happened to the Peach Drop.
What happened to the Atlanta Peach Drop?
For December 31, 2025, the City of Atlanta replaced the Peach Drop with “Countdown Over ATL.” In its December 15, 2025 announcement, Mayor Andre Dickens said, “we are reimagining that tradition with Countdown Over ATL,” and the release said “a Digital Drone Peach in the Sky will be able to be seen Downtown and Midtown” alongside synchronized fireworks at multiple sites around the city (City of Atlanta announcement).
A follow-up notice on December 30, 2025 gave the schedule: “The drone shows begin at 11:45 p.m., followed by a citywide fireworks display at midnight” (City of Atlanta details).
CBS News Atlanta reported the city released a list of more than 20 viewing spots across Buckhead, Midtown, Downtown and Southwest Atlanta (CBS Atlanta), and the idea, per WhatNow, was to ease crowding downtown and let people watch from their neighborhoods (WhatNow Atlanta).
That is the 2025 show. We did not find a City of Atlanta, Underground Atlanta, Downtown Atlanta or Centennial Olympic Park page for December 31, 2026, so we can’t say whether Countdown Over ATL returns, in what form, or whether any peach drop comes back to Underground Atlanta. We list it under “Not yet announced” below and will update this page when the city publishes a plan.
Atlanta’s family options that are confirmed
Atlanta’s confirmed New Year’s Eve events for families are daytime early countdowns, covered next: Zoo Atlanta and the Children’s Museum. After dark, the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Garden Lights, Holiday Nights runs “nightly Nov. 14, 2026 – Jan. 10, 2027,” open until midnight with last entry at 11 p.m. (garden page); the page doesn’t list special hours or a countdown for December 31. See our Garden Lights guide for tickets and tips.
Which Georgia New Year’s Eve events have early countdowns for kids?
Kids’ Early New Year’s Eve at Stone Mountain Park
Stone Mountain Park runs its Christmas event as usual on December 31 and adds an early countdown. Park hours that day are 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Christmas Drone & Light Show, “including Fire Drones,” is at 8 p.m. Then, in the park’s words, “countdown to the New Year early at 9 PM with music, dancing, a magical snowfall, and fireworks.”
Attractions close at 9 p.m. right after the countdown, and the park states, “There is no additional countdown at midnight” (Stone Mountain Park, checked ).
There is no separate ticket. The celebration “is included with a daily Christmas Attractions Ticket or annual Mountain Membership,” and the ticket page tells guests to “purchase a Stone Mountain Christmas Ticket or Combo Ticket for Dec. 31.”
Christmas Attractions tickets list at $39.99 for adults and $36.99 for children, per person ages 3 and up, with parking, taxes and service fees extra (ticket page). The Flight to the North Pole needs a Combo Ticket; the park’s pages don’t give that price.
Daily parking is $25 per vehicle and a daily pass “does not guarantee re-entry” (parking page). The Summit Skyride runs 10 a.m.–3 p.m. on this date, and the Scenic Railroad page carried a maintenance banner when we checked, so confirm before you plan around it. For the full rundown of the season, read our Stone Mountain Christmas guide.
Zoo Year’s Eve at Zoo Atlanta
Zoo Atlanta’s page describes Zoo Year’s Eve as “the perfect way for families to welcome 2027,” on December 31 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It offers an early countdown to the New Year every hour for children who can’t stay up until midnight, a DJ, entertainment, crafts, photo opportunities and a New Year’s ResZOOlution table (Zoo Atlanta, checked ).
The event is free with general admission and free for members, and the zoo says tickets “will go on sale later in 2026.” The full schedule isn’t posted yet. The page’s date line doesn’t print a year, but the “welcome 2027” wording and the 2026 ticket note place it on December 31, 2026. The zoo is at 800 Cherokee Avenue SE, Atlanta 30315.
New Year’s Bubble Bash at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta
The museum lists the Bubble Bash for “December 31, 2026” in three sessions: 9:30–11:30 a.m., 12:30–2:30 p.m. and 3:30–5:30 p.m. It promises “a special kid-friendly New Year’s countdown,” music from a DJ, hands-on fun and the museum’s yearly bubble-wrap-popping tradition.
A separate ticket is required, and the page lists no price or age range (Children’s Museum of Atlanta, checked ). The museum’s regular daily admission is $21.95 for adults and $19.95 for children 1–18, with babies 11 months and younger and members free (plan your visit); the Bubble Bash ticket is separate, so don’t assume those prices apply.
Where can you ring in midnight with the family in Georgia?
The Possum Drop in Tallapoosa
The Possum Drop calls itself “a Family Friendly New Year’s Eve Celebration in the small West Georgia town of Tallapoosa.” Its 2026 page counts down to 11:59:59 p.m. on December 31, 2026, invites you to “ring in 2027,” and says the party “transforms downtown into a festive street party packed with music, food, fireworks, and fun for all ages.”
It also settles the question people ask first: “We Do Not Use a Live Possum!” (thepossumdrop.com, checked ). Press coverage of the 2025 event described a stuffed possum named Spencer, lent by a local taxidermist, lowered in a ball covered in Christmas lights (WSB-TV).
The page names two acts, a classic-rock tribute band called A Foreigner’s Journey to Boston and a country act, Smokey Jones and The 3 Dollar Cowboys, and mentions fireworks. It does not post start or end times, ticket prices, parking or a street address.
A keyword list on the page also mentions kids’ New Year’s Eve activities, a carnival and VIP reservations, but gives no details, so treat those as unconfirmed. Past years included an early kids’ drop at 9 p.m. (the City of Tallapoosa’s 2022 listing and Fox 5’s 2024 coverage) and, in 2024, a sold-out crowd, but the organizers haven’t published a 2026 schedule, so check the site before you drive.
Dropping of the Edelweiss in Helen
The Helen Chamber of Commerce hosts the 13th Annual Dropping of the Edelweiss at the Helen Festhalle, 1074 Edelweiss Strasse, on “December 31, 2026,” from 8 p.m. to midnight. The evening includes live music, dancing, party favors, heavy hors d’oeuvres, a champagne toast at midnight, and beer and wine for purchase.
Admission is $30 per person, $15 for kids ages 6–16 and free for kids under 6. “We do not sell tickets in advance,” the chamber says; you pay at the door (Helen Chamber of Commerce, checked ). Questions go to the chamber at 706-878-1908.
The page doesn’t say whether there’s a dress code, and doesn’t describe the event as family-friendly in so many words; the child pricing and under-6 free admission show kids are expected. Helen is about 1 hour 52 minutes from downtown Atlanta with no traffic. If you’re making a weekend of it, see Christmas in Helen.
How do you get to the Atlanta and Stone Mountain events?
- Stone Mountain Park: 16.9 miles and about 32 minutes from downtown Atlanta with no traffic (our OSRM matrix, collected September 29, 2026). Daily parking is $25 per vehicle. Bikes and pedestrians enter free through the South Woods Gate (park parking page). With the countdown at 9 p.m. and attractions closing right after, expect everyone to leave at once.
- Children’s Museum of Atlanta (275 Centennial Olympic Park Dr NW): the museum recommends a lot at 236 Williams Street, about one block away, for $8 for museum guests except during blackout windows, and advises pre-purchasing. That lot isn’t run by the museum. By MARTA, the museum lists a walk of about 15 minutes from Peachtree Center station (Red and Gold lines) and about 18 minutes from the GWCC/CNN Center station (Blue and Green lines) (museum directions). Other options it names: 112 Baker Street, the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola and downtown public lots.
- Zoo Atlanta (800 Cherokee Avenue SE): the zoo’s pages link to a parking page and “Alternative Transportation” information, but we couldn’t read the parking price or MARTA directions, so check the zoo’s site before you go.
- Helen: about 87.6 miles from downtown Atlanta, 1 hour 52 minutes with no traffic. The Festhalle page doesn’t mention parking. Full table: Georgia drive times.
Tips for New Year’s Eve with kids
- Pick the countdown that fits your kid’s bedtime. Zoo Atlanta counts down every hour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the Children’s Museum has three sessions, the last ending at 5:30 p.m.; Stone Mountain’s is at 9 p.m. and the park says there is no midnight countdown. Helen and Tallapoosa run to midnight.
- Buy ahead where you can. The Children’s Museum requires a separate ticket and recommends pre-buying parking; Zoo Atlanta says tickets go on sale later in 2026. The Helen party takes payment only at the door.
- Little kids are cheaper in Helen. Under 6 is free and ages 6–16 are $15 against the adult $30.
- Stone Mountain is a long day. The park is open 12–9 p.m. but the light show and countdown are the last two events, so arrive for the afternoon attractions and stay. Pets must be on a 6-foot leash and aren’t allowed in special-events areas or attractions, per the park’s FAQ (as we read it September 30, 2026).
- Check the weather and the schedule the week of. Hours, lineups and prices can change, and organizers post late.
What should you wear on New Year’s Eve in Georgia?
NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals give Atlanta (Hartsfield) a December average high of 56.2°F and low of 38.4°F, with about 9.1 nights at or below freezing.
